IP vs ISDN

The migration from ISDN to IP for Video Conferencing is well underway.

The primary motivator for this shift is the decreased costs associated with IP Video Conferencing, in short, ISDN video systems are more expensive to purchase, maintain, and manage than IP video systems.

However, organizations should recognize that it is not always necessary or prudent to go with the flow. Instead, organizations should consider a mixed IP/ISDN strategy (called a hybrid environment) that combines the control, flexibility, and redundancy of an ISDN system with cost reduction and control of an IP system.

In most cases migrating to IP will result in cost savings for the host organization but enterprises with limited monthly usage whose existing data networks are not capable of hosting video traffic may find ISDN to be less expensive than IP, but remember, as usage increases, so does the cost of ISDN. For this reason a hybrid environment can give you the best of both worlds.
